- Patent Trolls: A brief introduction.
Scott Baxendale has been a practicing patent attorney since 1996. After receiving his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 1988, with honors, Scott began his career as an information technologies consultant with Anderson Consulting, now Accenture. While with Anderson, he specialized in the development of large-scale integrated distribution systems for clients in the retail industry. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, the position ultimately took him to Chicago. He then obtained his JD from The John Marshall Law School in 1996, again with honors, and has been engaged entirely in intellectual property law for the fourteen years since. For the first several years of his practice, Scott was actively involved in patent litigation, in suits ranging from home storage bags and containers to automotive parts. At the same time, however, he was also drafting patent applications and honing his prosecution skills. For the past several years he has been entirely focused on patent prosecution and opinion work. Some of the technologies with which he has significant personal experience are process control valves and regulators, electronic gaming machines, digital satellite television systems, mechanical toys and games, computer networking software, cellular telecommunications, automotive seating, e-commerce applications, and decorative and security window coverings. In addition to drafting applications and amendments, Scott also enjoys assisting in-house counsel in managing patent portfolios and counseling clients with respect to patentability, non-infringement and invalidity issues.
Scott is registered to practice before the US Patent & Trademark Office, the State of Illinois, the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the US District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, and the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He was also recently recommended by his peers and selected as a "Leading Lawyer" by Leading Lawyers Network, a division of Law Bulletin Publishing Company.
