The Village of Arlington Heights is seeking an analytical and technology-driven Utility Technician to join its Public Works & Engineering Department. This position plays an important role in modernizing infrastructure management by maintaining accurate utility records, permits, geographic information systems (GIS) data, and asset information that support informed decision-making and reliable public infrastructure services.
 
The Utility Technician develops and maintains GIS data, utility records, engineering documents, and infrastructure databases related to the Village’s water, sewer, street lighting, signage, rights-of-way, and other public assets. The position supports maintenance planning, capital improvement projects, permit coordination, and long-term asset management through GIS, mapping, GPS technologies, utility permitting, field inspections, and data management.
 
Working collaboratively with Public Works & Engineering staff, contractors, utility companies, consortium partners, and other stakeholders, the Utility Technician interprets engineering and construction plans, identifies potential utility conflicts, conducts permit reviews/approvals and field inspections, and provides technical information to support infrastructure operations and improvement projects. The position plays an important role in supporting infrastructure planning and operations through utility coordination, Village asset records, preparation of maps and graphics, review of infrastructure information, and coordination of projects.
 
The ideal candidate will bring strong analytical, technical, and organizational skills, with the ability to interpret engineering plans, manage complex records, and communicate technical information effectively. An Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology, GIS, or a related field is required, along with two or more years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with municipal infrastructure, GIS and CADD software, GPS data collection, utility coordination, municipal permitting, plan review, inspection, or asset management systems is preferred.
 
The anticipated starting salary for this position is $85,043 - $87,394, depending on qualifications, with a full salary range of $85,043 - $114,808. The Utility Technician works a 40-hour work week and will be offered a diverse and competitive benefits package, including health and dental insurance, paid vacation, opportunities for professional development, and participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund pension plan.
