Maintenance Worker I - Forestry and Grounds Unit

The Village of Arlington Heights is accepting applications for the position of Maintenance Worker I in the Forestry & Grounds Unit of the Public Works & Engineering Department. The Forestry and Grounds Unit is responsible for the care and maintenance of 36,000 Village-owned trees and 110 acres of public property. As part of a dedicated team of 9 full-time employees, the Maintenance Worker I – Forestry will play a crucial role in the upkeep of trees, municipal grounds, and right-of-ways across the Village.

The Maintenance Worker I will plant, cultivate, and care for trees, flowers, and shrubs, including treating with pesticides and fertilizers. In addition, the Maintenance Worker I will assist with tree pruning, branch pick-ups, and the removal of broken or hanging branches. The Forestry unit also participates in the snow removal program as necessary.  

The Maintenance Worker I will support the Forestry Unit with community outreach through special events and educational presentations to residents on topics such as tree health and tree maintenance. In addition, the Maintenance Worker I will assist the unit with the coordination and set-up of special events in the Village. The Maintenance Worker I will perform other duties as assigned. 

The full salary range for this position is $67,238-$90,770, with an anticipated hiring range of $67,238 - $69,094, depending on qualifications and experience. This position includes a diverse and competitive benefits package, including health and dental insurance, paid vacation, and participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund pension plan. The normal work hours for this position are Monday - Friday from 7:00 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. for a total of 40 hours per week. The Maintenance Worker I must be able to operate basic equipment and machinery safely and be able to respond to emergency call-outs and perform winter maintenance operations as needed.

Qualified candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED), and least one year of experience in general or municipal maintenance and repair. A valid Illinois Commercial Driver’s License Class A with airbrake and tanker endorsements is preferred, or must be able to obtain within one year of hire. Experience in tree care preferred. Candidates should hold an Illinois Pesticide License or have ability to obtain within one year of hire.
